HIV PrEP, HIV PEP and DoxyPEP

HIV PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)
  • What it is: Medication taken regularly before potential exposure to HIV to help prevent the virus from taking hold if exposure occurs.
  • How it works: Helps to block HIV from establishing infection in the body.
  • Where to get it:
  • Health Services: Providers can prescribe HIV PrEP during office hours (Monday-Friday).
  • Planned Parenthood: Local offices can also prescribe HIV PrEP. Call 518-584-0041 to make an appointment.
HIV PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis)
  • What it is: Medication taken after a possible exposure to HIV to prevent the virus from spreading. It must be started within 72 hours of exposure, with the sooner the better.
  • How it works: Prevents HIV from taking hold after a potential exposure.
  • Where to get it:
  • Health Services: Providers can prescribe HIV PEP during office hours.
  • HIV PEP Hotline: Call 844-PEP-4NOW (24/7) for immediate access to HIV PEP medication, with prescriptions sent to a local pharmacy.
  • Emergency Rooms: HIV PEP can also be prescribed at emergency rooms, including Saratoga Hospital Emergency Room.
Doxy-PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis for STIs)
  • What it is: A medication to reduce the risk of bacterial STIs (syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia) after exposure.
  • Who it's for: Currently indicated for those assigned male at birth (AMAB) who have sexual contact with other AMAB individuals (including gay, bisexual men, and transgender women).
  • Where to get it:
  • Health Services: Providers can prescribe Doxy-PEP during office hours.

    These medications play an important role in preventing the transmission of HIV and STIs. If students believe they might need PrEP, PEP, or Doxy-PEP, they can reach out to Health Services or one of the other resources listed for consultation and prescriptions.
