ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Young Scholars Science Institute
A summer program incorporating a variety of STEM related subjects from cell biology to chemistry to computer science and beyond for local high school students.
The ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Young Scholars Science Institute is a continuation of the Young Scholars Cell Biology Institute started in 2016, which is originally a major successful outreach initiative sponsored by the National Science Foundation. In the past, participating high schools include Shenendehowa, Saratoga Springs, Boston lake, Boston spa, South Glens Falls, Lake George, Schuylerville, Galway, Saratoga Central Catholic, Northwood School, and Emma Willard School. This year, we are excited to broaden this program from mainly cell biology to all the related STEM fields with the aim to provide opportunities for high schoolers exploring all subdisciplines of science and learning about potential careers in these areas. The institute will include comprehensive hands-on learning in various areas of science, including biology, microscopy, neuroscience, chemistry, computer science, human physiology, physics and environmental science, etc. Additionally, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø students will participate in the week’s activities and give high school students perspectives on college life and science careers. Kaylee Bagdan, who attended this program in 2016, said" This program sparked my interest in STEM, and led to me pursuing my career in the field." Later she graduated from ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø in 2024 and is currently a graduate student in Biology at Cornell University.
To make this program as accessible as possible to students of all backgrounds, the entire program will be free of charge, including daily free lunches. Students are only responsible for transportation to and from campus on their own. During the program, the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Billie Tisch Center for Integrated Sciences (BTCIS) and ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø McGraw Microscopy Imaging Center (SMMIC) will open to high school students. This program is primarily for students entering their Junior and Senior years of high school; however, we welcome all grades of high school students to apply. If you have any question, Please contact Lily Kozel, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Microscopy Imaging Center Manager.
