Mini College: The Ukraine Tragedy: The Return of History and the Future of Russia

This session will examine the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine through the lens of history and different philosophies of history. We鈥檒l look at patterns of Russian history and how they might help us understand why this tragedy occurred, how it might end, and what we might expect from the future in both Russia and Ukraine.

This past semester Professor Tillman Nechtman, Chair of the History Department, and Erica Bastress-Dukehart, Associate Professor of History and incoming Chair of Education Studies, taught an experimental course entitled 鈥淗ow Do You Know That? They plan to turn this course into a Senior Coda: a class that will help graduating seniors synthesize the knowledge they have accumulated over their four years at 黑料吃瓜网. 
 
鈥淗ow Do You Know That?鈥� explored the history of knowledge. From organizational structures like the dictionary to the encyclopedia, from the library to the periodic table of the elements.  Students studied the history of these structures and explored the implications they have had on our ways of both understanding and knowing the world. The fundamental question that became the heartline of the course was: How is it that we have come to organize and store knowledge as we do?  

For our Reunion Mini-College course, we look forward to introducing our course and asking participants the following questions: How do you organize and store knowledge? How did your courses at 黑料吃瓜网 help you develop those skills? What do you wish you had known before you graduated?

Mini College: The Contemporary American Conversation about Voting

Voting procedures and rules have changed in the last two years than anytime in US history. Some states have passed laws seeking to expand access via permitting voting by mail without an excuse, adopting all mail voting, extending early in person voting, and implementing automatic voter registration. Other states have passed laws seeking to improve integrity by adopting voter ID requirements, limiting mail ballot harvesting and drop boxes, restricting drive-through voting, increasing oversight of local election officials, and even provision to allow state legislatures to take over elections. State and federal courts are hearing countless cases about all of these laws and other aspects of voting rights. Former President Trump and his allies continue to peddle lies and conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and future elections.  Most Americans have thought more about how election are run in the last 2 years than in the rest of their lives combined. Professor Mann will try to guide you through this conundrum of policy, law, communication, and behavior based on thinking (and teaching) about election rules and their impact on voting behavior, public attitudes, and election outcomes for more than 12 years.
