1-4pm, Payne Room in the Tang
Love within the U.S. context is often defined in overly individualistic and depoliticized
ways. Why? What about love and its role in social transformation? This session will
analyze the ways in which the everyday notion of love operates as a tool of oppression
and perpetuates white supremacist ideology to shape our social realities, desirability,
and diminish possibilities for social transformation. This session will offer us all
an opportunity to interrogate what love is, how we have been socialized by it, and
how it shapes our capacity to lead change and hold each other with loving accountability.
In this workshop, led by Founder and CEO Durryle Brooks, we will explore a Critical Theory of Love framework
to interrogate our own social justice practices and ensure that we are not perpetuating
oppression, but instead helping ourselves and others to heal while resisting erasure
and dehumanization.
Participants will leave with:

In It 9 - What It Takes To Heal with Prentis Hemphill
3-4pm, Gannett Auditorium
As we emerge from the past few years of collective upheaval, are we ready to face
the complexities of our time with joy, authenticity, and connection? Now, more than
ever, we must learn to heal ourselves, connect with each other, and embody our values.
Join Prentis Hemphill, author of the new book What It Takes To Heal: How Transforming
Ourselves Can Change the World, in a conversation on the intersection of individual
healing and societal transformation. We explore questions of what it means to be well
in an increasingly unwell earth and in fractured societies and families. Together
we can look for ways that our pursuit of healing can be reparative for ourselves,
for our relationships, our communities, and the places where we live.
