Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is responsible for ensuring
compliance with federal regulations, inspecting animal facilities and laboratories
and overseeing training and educational programs. The overall role of the IACUC is
to ensure the humane and sensitive care and use of animals.
Every institution that uses animals for federally funded laboratory research must
have an IACUC. Each local IACUC reviews research protocols and conducts evaluations
of the institution's animal care and use program, which includes the results of inspections
of facilities that are required by law.
