Programs and Training

ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø requires Basic Laboratory Safety Trainingfor all laboratory employees, paid or unpaid, including faculty, staff, students and visitors, to insure that they are appropriately informed about health and physical hazards present in the lab and methods for minimizing the potential exposure to those risks. Basic aboratory safety training sessions are offered at the beginning of the fall and spring semester and before summer session. If a special session is needed, contact Kara Cetto Bales at 518-580-5130.

In addition to the basic laboratory safety, some individuals may need other training sessions as determined by their individual job duties and/or the specific hazard(s) within the laboratory. 

Animal Health and Safety
The ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø college Heath and Safety Guide for Animal Care Personnel provides education about the use of animals in the research and teaching environment, as well as, guidelines to govern animal use and care. All faculty, staff and students, who may be or are exposed to live animals during research or teaching, to must contact Loretta Greenholtz at 518-580-5136 to participate in the occupational health and safety program. 

Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)
Biological Safety is responsible for anticipating, assessing and controlling risks posed by the handling and use of bacteria, viruses, potentially infectious human materials and other microorganisms, toxins and biological materials, in research and teaching practice.  Contact Loretta Greenholtz at 518-580-5136 with questions regarding the appropriate biosafety trainings you require.

Advanced Laboratory Safety
Advanced laboratory safety training is required for all research students and laboratory student assistants. The training is focused on the recongnition and evaluation of risks associated with various hazards found in the laboratory. Individuals will gain knowledge of the institutions's policies and practices, how to access chemical hazards, as well as emergency procedures, including chemical spill response and fire safety. Advanced laboratory safety training sessions can be scheduled by contact Kara Cetto Bales at 518-580-5130.

Radiation Safety
The Radiation Safety Program is responsible for assisting the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø community in the safe use of ionizing radiation including radioactive materials and x-rays. The program is designed to protect faculty, students and staff from exposure, and ensure the safe receipt, handling, use and storage of radioactive materials.  The mission of this program is to facilitate safe conditions for utilizing radiation, maintain radiation exposures As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA), and to ensure operations are in compliance with applicable state and federal regulations.
