Programs and Training
ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø requires Basic Laboratory Safety Trainingfor all laboratory employees, paid or unpaid, including faculty, staff, students and visitors, to insure that they are appropriately informed about health and physical hazards present in the lab and methods for minimizing the potential exposure to those risks. Basic aboratory safety training sessions are offered at the beginning of the fall and spring semester and before summer session. If a special session is needed, contact Kara Cetto Bales at 518-580-5130.
In addition to the basic laboratory safety, some individuals may need other training sessions as determined by their individual job duties and/or the specific hazard(s) within the laboratory.
Animal Health and Safety
The ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø college Heath and Safety Guide for Animal Care Personnel provides education
about the use of animals in the research and teaching environment, as well as, guidelines
to govern animal use and care. All faculty, staff and students, who may be or are
exposed to live animals during research or teaching, to must contact Loretta Greenholtz
at 518-580-5136 to participate in the occupational health and safety program.
Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)
Biological Safety is responsible for anticipating, assessing and controlling risks
posed by the handling and use of bacteria, viruses, potentially infectious human materials
and other microorganisms, toxins and biological materials, in research and teaching
practice. Contact Loretta Greenholtz at 518-580-5136 with questions regarding the
appropriate biosafety trainings you require.
Advanced Laboratory Safety
Advanced laboratory safety training is required for all research students and laboratory
student assistants. The training is focused on the recongnition and evaluation of
risks associated with various hazards found in the laboratory. Individuals will gain
knowledge of the institutions's policies and practices, how to access chemical hazards,
as well as emergency procedures, including chemical spill response and fire safety.
Advanced laboratory safety training sessions can be scheduled by contact Kara Cetto
Bales at 518-580-5130.
Radiation Safety
The Radiation Safety Program is responsible for assisting the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø community
in the safe use of ionizing radiation including radioactive materials and x-rays.
The program is designed to protect faculty, students and staff from exposure, and
ensure the safe receipt, handling, use and storage of radioactive materials. The
mission of this program is to facilitate safe conditions for utilizing radiation,
maintain radiation exposures As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA), and to ensure
operations are in compliance with applicable state and federal regulations. To schedule
a radiation training session, contact the radiation safety officer, Loretta Greenholtz,
at 518-580-5136.
