Reception: Thursday, September 13, 5:30 – 7 p.m.
Artists’ Talk: Wednesday, September 26, 4 – 5 p.m.
The Schick Art Gallery is pleased to present the 2018 Selected Art Faculty Exhibition, featuring new works by Fabian Lopez (Painting), Doretta Miller (Painting), Andrea
Peterson (Jewelry and Metals), and Sarah Sweeney (Digital Media.)
Memories of specific places and experiences are the base upon which Fabian Lopez builds his paintings. His vivid palette is shaped by colors associated with Los Angeles
and with Mexican culture – both aspects of his personal history. He teaches Painting
and Drawing, and has shown his work at numerous venues, including the Courthouse Gallery
in Lake George, NY, Collar Works in Troy, NY, and Temple Gallery in Rome, Italy.
Sarah Sweeney digitally-alters photographs in order to question commonly-held ideas about memory,
identity, and photography itself. A frequent subject is the relationship between the
photograph, which she describes as ‘rigid and enduring,’ and our ‘living and malleable’
memories. Sweeney teaches Digital Media and Animation, and her exhibition record includes
shows at Opalka Gallery in Albany, the Courthouse Gallery in Lake George, and the
School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois, among other venues.
Metalsmith Andrea Peterson takes her inspiration from nature. She writes, ‘Rocks, trees, eroding coastlines,
decaying matter and meandering streams; all have particular qualities that influence
my work and serve as catalyst for exploration.’ Peterson teaches Jewelry and Metals,
and has exhibited her work at the Schenectady Museum, the Worcester Center for Crafts
in Massachusetts, and the Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA, as well as other
galleries and museums.
Doretta Miller marks the conclusion of her 37-year teaching career with four site-specific paintings
honoring ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø campus buildings that hold special memories for her. One of these
new pieces focuses on the Saisselin Art Building, using the building’s airy, sky-lit
painting studio as its core image. Besides teaching painting, her professional life
has included a stint as visiting professor at Oufu University in the People’s Republic
of China, and the curation of two exhibitions on contemporary painting in China. She
has shown her work extensively, and is represented by the First Street Gallery in
Manhattan, NY, and by Oakroom Artists Gallery in Schenectady, NY.
All four artists will participate in a gallery talk on Wednesday, September 26, from
4 – 5 p.m. in the gallery.
Schick Art Gallery events are free and the public is welcome. The gallery is located
in the Saisselin Art Building; a map of the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø campus may be found on the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø
College website.
