窪蹋勛圖厙 Spotlight: Adam Cottle

July 21, 2021

Adam Cottle

Adam Cottle, metadata librarian at the Lucy Scribner Library, leads  a small team of catalogers who prepare library materials for student and faculty researchers.

Cottle worked in several academic libraries before joining 窪蹋勛圖厙 in January 2020.

窪蹋勛圖厙s reputation as a renowned liberal arts college first drew me to the school. The liberal arts curriculum empowers young scholars to critically navigate our disorienting world, he said. Additionally, I love history and nature. This part of the country has plenty to explore in both aspects.

Although library cataloging is a very old profession. Cottle said the field is undergoing major transformations that improve the library research experience through web-based technologies.

Shortly after arriving on campus, Cottle shifted to working remotely. I had barely settled into my office before the pandemic upended all of our lives, Cottle said. I have spent more time on campus in the past two months than over the entire past year. I have enjoyed being in the presence of my colleagues at the library. Zoom is a great tool, but I am happy to be able to see my co-workers in person. I am looking forward to the upcoming fall semester as it will be my first real semester on campus.

In his free time, Cottle enjoys spending time in nature. An amateur musician, he plays guitar, drums, and keyboards.

Anything I can get my hands on, basically. I also love synthesizers. My inner nerd enjoys the programmatic logic required to operate them, he quipped.
