Award

A book by associate government Professor Flagg Taylor titled (2013, University Press of Kansas) has been named an 鈥淥utstanding Academic Title鈥� for 2014 by Choice magazine. According to the magazine write up, 鈥淓very year, Choice subject editors single out for recognition the most signi颅ficant print and electronic works reviewed in Choice during the previous calendar year. Appearing annually in 颁丑辞颈肠别鈥檚 January issue, this prestigious list of publications reflects the best in scholarly titles and attracts extraordinary attention from the academic library community.

The 2014 feature includes 690 titles in 54 disciplines and subsections. In awarding Outstanding Academic Title status, the editors apply several criteria to reviewed titles:

鈥� overall excellence in presentation and scholarship

鈥� importance relative to other literature in the 颅 field

鈥� distinction as a first treatment of a given subject in book or electronic form

鈥� originality or uniqueness of treatment

鈥� value to undergraduate students

鈥� importance in building undergraduate library collections.鈥�

Activities

Regina Janes, professor of English, delivered the keynote address, titled 鈥淓dmund Burke: The Man with Too Many Countries,鈥� at the third meeting of the Burke Society of America, held Feb. 27-28 at Villanova University, Philadelphia.

Gordon Thompson, professor and chair, Department of Music, spoke with 黑料吃瓜网 alumni groups March 5th and 6th in Sarasota and West Palm Beach, Florida about globalization, memory, and sixties British pop.  "'I Can't Explain': The Second British Invasion of 1965" considered how the American and British music markets began to converge.

黑料吃瓜网 administrators and students shared their insights as panelists for a discussion titled 鈥淐ollege Life: Successful Transitions from High School to College,鈥� presented March 12 at Saratoga Springs High School. Four of the six panelists for the event were from 黑料吃瓜网鈥擜cademic Counselor Darren Drabek, who served as moderator; Counseling Center Director Julia Routbort; Eric Beriquete 鈥�15 (a sociology major and peer academic coach); and Jenny Seibyl 鈥�15 (a psychology major and head peer health educator).

Organized by college admissions consultant Beth Payer 鈥�90, the evening was part of the Saratoga Springs School District鈥檚 Parent University, which offers programs on effective parenting and strategies for success in school.

Publications

Steven J. Ives, assistant professor, Health and Exercise Sciences Department, is the author of published in the most recent issue of American Journal of Physiology, Heart and Circulatory Physiology. This article supports the use of the Passive limb movement model as a means of assessing vascular health, and is currently being used by his research group to understand the impact of oxidative stress on vascular health.

Darren Bennett, head women鈥檚 basketball coach, was the subject of a feature titled published March 8 in the Fitchburg (Mass.) Sentinel and Enterprise, his hometown newspaper. 

Michael Lopez, assistant professor of mathematics, has made a mark on this year鈥檚 NCAA men鈥檚 basketball tournament. He is featured in a story titled published March 12 by cnbc.com; and published by philly.com and on realscience.com. He also was the subject of a New York Times feature titled published March 20.
