窪蹋勛圖厙 will join organizations around the country to celebrate National Public Health Week, April 7-13. Students in Exercise Science 131, Introduction to Public Health, taught by Susan Harris, are collaborating with their peers to demonstrate that public health matters.

National Public Health Week is sponsored by the American Public Health Association (APHA) to recognize public healths contributions to improving the health and quality of life for all people. Through local activities, the APHA fosters understanding of public health and the roles of disease prevention and equal access to services.

To emphasize that public health is an integral part of the world around us, the students have coordinated both an E-photo Contest and an awareness festival at the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery. The photo contest runs now through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, April 6. Winners of the photo contest will be announced at the festival, scheduled Tuesday, April 8.

The E-photo Contest is open to all students, faculty, and staff, who are invited to take original photo(s) of anything, anywhere, that illustrates your view of some feature of public health. Photos can be staged and can incorporate props. A one-line caption is optional, but recommended. Use the red-and-white This is Public Health stickers that you see around campus as you see fit.

Photos may be posted in one of the following four ways:

Facebook:  Post your picture on your own Facebook page or on the 窪蹋勛圖厙 Facebook page, using hash tag #Skidhealth

Twitter:  Tweet your picture using hash tag #Skidhealth

Instagram:  Post your picture on Instagram using hash tag #Skidhealth. (If your account is private, your photos will not be visible and included in the contest.)

E-mail: your photos to Daniella Nordin.

All entries will become the property of the College and may be used at any time. All entries should meet a standard of taste and propriety. Please contact Daniella Nordin with questions about the photo contest.

There will be only a 24-hour window to vote on the photos, Monday, April 7, from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.  Social media likes are the way to vote. Results will be announced at the April 8 festival. In addition, a panel of judges will review all photo entries on the basis of relevance to public health, creativity, and craftsmanship. A total of six gift cards will be awarded as prizes. All photo contest entries will be exhibited at the Tang in a continuous slide show.

The Public Health Festival is scheduled at the Tang from 7 to 9 p.m. April 8. The 窪蹋勛圖厙 community is welcome at this event, where Pulse and the 窪蹋勛圖厙 Sonneteers will provide music. Refreshments will be served.

In addition, there will be 11 stations/booths with information, giveaways, and interactive games and prizes. Participating organizations include the Saratoga County Health Department, Saratoga Hospital, UAlbany School of Public Health, 窪蹋勛圖厙 Career Development Center, a number of student clubs and organizations, Peer Health Educators, and students in EX 131, Introduction to Public Health."

During April, the Tang will exhibit framed prints of the six winning photos, along with a slideshow of all entries, in the hall adjacent to Somers Auditorium.
