Student Projects
Liza Nagode, Class of 2014
Through the International Honors Program I attended a program called Beyond Globalization. Our group spent a year travelling in five different countries Washington DC, USA, Tanzania, India, New Zealand, and Guatemala exploring urban and rural communities and landscapes affected by globalization, development, and progress. We had the privilege to meet many influential critics of current patterns of development and familiarize ourselves with some of the social movements and other initiatives that are trying to challenge the globalized economic system and confront its consequences.
The experience opened my eyes and challenged me in so many ways. The program fitted perfectly into my IA major since it explored current development issues from anthropological, environmental, economical, and political standpoints. The fact that the program was a yearlong seemed scary at first but now I see that the time gave me an opportunity to get to know the countries we visited on a more profound level. Along the way I met many interesting people and formed lifetime friendships. It was an unforgettable year that left a huge mark on me and I would warmly recommend it to anyone who wants and is ready to see the world through different eyes.
