Scribner Seminar Program
Course Description
Sound, Speech, Story, Song
Instructor(s): Adam Tinkle, Media and Film Studies
An interdisciplinary dive into human sonic/oral communication, examining scholarly and artistic perspectives on speech, storytelling and song. Beginning with evolutionary, anthropological and humanistic theories of soundscape and orality, the course focuses in on practice-based study of creative traditions that depend centrally on our voices, asking students to tell, and reflect on telling, their stories, examining not only their content and emphasis, but also in the way we structure and give voice to them. After sampling from scholarly analyses of autobiographical storytelling and songwriting practices, traditions and scenes, we will step into active and public participation. The course also aims to get students off campus and facilitates exploration of the available opportunities for witnessing and performing stories and songs in Saratoga, particularly at the famed Caffe Lena and its weekly open mic night.
