Course Description
Power, Identity, justice
Instructor(s): Gwen D'Arcangelis, Gender Studies
Identity politics has come under fire from all directions. Notably, from the right identity is at best relevant only in past tense, at worst an excuse for undeserving folks to get ahead without putting the work in. And, from some corners of the left, identity politics has gone “too far,” obscuring so-called realy problems like capitalism. In this class we will explore the politics of identity and why it matters. The course explores issues from gender and sexism to race and racism. Each week focuses on a particular power/identity formation—first focusing on its historical backdrop as well as contemporary manifestations, second on the application of knowledge to social change and social justice. The approach to each power/identity formation will consider the approach taken as a member of a targeted groups vs. as a member of the power group.
