Course Description
Music on the Move
Instructor(s): Charlotte D'Evelyn, Music
This course explores how movement of people and ideas across the globe have shaped music-making, musical instruments, musical styles, and musical relationships throughout history. Students in this course will participate in listening, reading, writing, and discussion to observe how global music cultures have always been in dynamic flux through cultural contact, sharing, borrowing, and mixing. We will explore and experience case studies from a variety of musical genres and styles of concert, traditional, and popular musics around the world. Through these studies of music and global movement, we will grapple with concepts such as colonialism, cultural imperialism, globalization, localization, diaspora, authenticity, and hybridity.
