Course Description
Only Losers go to School? Education, Power and Social justice
Instructor(s): Lucia Hulsether, Religous Studies
An examination of the relationship between schooling and social justice movements in the Americas. Students study specific movements within their historical and cultural contexts. We will engage with radical pedagogies—such as Theater of the Oppressed, collaborative assessment, and abolitionist education models—as both critics and practitioners. We will do so while considering a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to studying the issues represented in this course, including religious studies, anthropology, history, feminist and queer theory, critical ethnic studies, and critical university studies. Experimenting with a range of approaches and reflecting on our own experiences with education, students will develop skills in critical thinking, exposition, and reading.
