Scribner Seminar Program
Course Description
Family Connections
Instructor(s): Susan Walzer, Sociology
Interactions between family members inspire situation comedy as well as explanations for the most serious of human behaviors. In this course, students investigate family relationships as sources of individual joy, sorrow, experience, and identity—and as patterned interactions that reveal and recreate social expectations and forms. Drawing on research studies and expressive narratives, we explore how the approaches of social science and humanities differ and intersect in illuminating the influences of family members on each other.
