Course Description
BrinGing Death to Life
Instructors: Kelly Melekis, Social Work
Death is one of few universal experiences and has been a subject of inquiry in every discipline. In this course, we will explore death, dying, grief and loss, from multiple perspectives. Sociological, psychological, anthropological, historical, medical, spiritual, literary and artistic investigations and explanations will be considered. We will examine historical influences, social contexts, and cross-cultural perspectives that impact our personal and social attitudes regarding death, with significant attention to understanding the diversity of experiences and reactions to death, loss and grief. Students are encouraged to examine their own feelings and beliefs about the topic and share their personal experiences and reactions regarding the issues raised in readings, class discussions, and assignments.
