Professor Mehmet Odekon, Chair of CFG, moved that the three motions that were presented at the September 8th faculty meeting be tabled to the October 6th faculty meeting. The motion was seconded, and it carried with a unanimous vote of the faculty.
REPORTS
Professor John Brueggemann, Chair of CEPP, requested this special faculty meeting to discuss the draft proposal of the core curriculum with members of the faculty. CEPP believes that the existing curriculum lacks coherence and imposes constraints that may narrow students’ educational opportunities. CEPP proposes that the faculty revise the core curriculum, streamlining and rationalizing the all-college requirements. Based on today’s conversation, CEPP plans to develop a formal proposal that will be presented to the faculty at this year’s October or November faculty meeting. Depending on the progress of discussion, a vote then could be taken at the December faculty meeting in order to get the new curriculum in place by next year.
Professor Brueggemann then moved that the faculty meeting resolve itself into a Committee of the Whole to discuss the draft curriculum proposal presented by CEPP. The motion was seconded, and it carried. Professor Tad Kuroda chaired the Committee of the Whole and briefly explained to the faculty how the Committee of the whole functions.
After a lengthy discussion, Professor John Thomas moved that the Committee of the Whole rise and report. The motion was seconded and it carried.
Professor Kuroda reported that the Committee of the Whole met and discussed CEPP’s proposal for a revised core curriculum.
The meeting adjourned at 5:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Claire Demarest
Executive Secretary
Vice President for Academic Affairs and
Dean of the Faculty’s Office
