Department Chairs and Program Directors: Navigating Equity Issues & Conflicts

Department Chairs and Program Directors have to address many challenging issues, many of which might have diversity, equity or inclusion considerations. This session explores theoretical frameworks of conflict resolution to help academic leaders identify their dominant conflict resolution style, followed by a discussion of the pros and cons of each conflict resolution style. Participants will be requested to completed a brief self-assessment of their conflict resolution style via a questionnaire prior to the session. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss scenarios related to the challenges of being a department chair or program director. The scenarios presented in this session have been actively collected through real-life experiences of department chairs and program directors at various institutions of higher education.
