Professor David Domozych awarded a $382,000 NSF Molecular and Cell Biology grant.

The National Science Foundation Molecular and Cell Biology Program has awarded David Domozych, Professor of Biology, a $382,000 grant for a study entitled, “Invasion of land: Using model charophyte Penium margaritaceum to elucidate subcellular responses to stress that were key in the evolution of land plants (NSF-MCB: 1517345). This 3-year project will employ microscopy-based, immunolabeling, biochemical and molecular technologies to examine the structure and development of the complex extracellular matrix of Penium. This study will elucidate possible ways that land plants evolved from aquatic green algae, provide insight into the development of the plant cell wall and reveal mechanisms that plants use to respond to stress such as drought. This grant will also support six ϳԹ undergraduates for summer collaborative research and the establishment of a summer, high school-based program called the “ϳԹ Young Scholar Cell Biology Institute”.

Congratulations to the Dowd-Lester Winner, Chelsea Fujimoto '15, and the Donald Pyle Award Winner, Kara Rode '15! You can read more about both of these outstanding students here.
