Upcoming Activity
Diana Barnes, visiting assistant professor of Spanish, will be a featured speaker at the Dec. 4 “Community Cinema” program of the Saratoga Springs Public Library. Free and open the public, the program will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s H. Dutcher Community Room. The event will begin with a screening of the The State of Arizona, a documentary produced and directed by Carlos Sandoval and Catherine Tambini. The film captures the explosive emotions and complex realities behind Arizona’s headline-grabbing struggle with illegal immigration. Examining Arizona’s controversial Senate Bill 1070 (dubbed the “show me your papers” law), the film tells the stories of Arizonans on all sides of this divisive issue from ground zero of the nation’s immigration debate.
Barnes has done firsthand research and interviews along parts the nearly 2,000-mile border between the U.S. and Mexico. There, a combustible mix of U.S. immigration policy, poverty, and global economics has turned Mexican border cities into dangerous places to live and work. Barnes has spent time exploring the human side of this hot-button immigration issue, visiting towns on both sides of the border. In a related effort, she also works for the well being of Latino workers at the Saratoga Race Course.
