Life on the Edge; Three Decades of Discovery at Hydrothermal Vents
Dr. Peter Girguis
This lecture is a part of the Ridge 2000 Program: Distinguished Lecturer Series. Ridge 2000 is a multidisciplinary program that integrates geosciences and biosciences, sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Our outstanding speaker is Dr. Peter Girguis, an assistant professor in the Organismal and Evolutionary Biology Department at Harvard University. His research focuses on deep-sea marine microbial physiology, in particular how microbes mediate carbon and nitrogen cycling at hydrothermal vents and hydrocarbon seeps. This lecture is a general focused broadly to interest a general audience including middle- and high-school students.
Focus the Nation on Solutions to Global Warming
Eban Goodstein is a Professor of Economics at Lewis & Clark Collegeand Director of Focus the Nation
Goodstein is the Director of Focus the Nation, a national global warming educational initiative, which is coordinating teams of faculty, students and staff at over a thousand colleges and universities and high schools in the United States to participate in a nationwide, nonpartisan discussion on the theme of climate stabilization. The project will also include the participation of religious, civic and business organizations, and will culminate on Jan. 31, 2008, in a one-day symposium to be held simultaneously on campuses across the country. Focus the Nation could be a catalyzing event on par with Earth Day 1970 that could help turn the national conversation about global warming from fatalism to constructive engagement with the challenge of our generation.

Williams-Mystic Maritime Studies Program Information Table
Career Services will host this information session. The Maritime Studies Program of Williams College and Mystic Seaport: Students explore an interdisciplinary curriculum of ocean and coastal studies integrating marine science, maritime history, environmental policy, and literature of the sea. Students live in historic, cooperative, coed houses at Mystic Seaport, the world's largest maritime museum, and have full access to world-class maritime collections, a maritime library, well-equipped laboratory, and diverse coastal habitats. College sophomores, juniors, and seniors may participate, and all majors are welcome. No sailing or maritime experience is necessary, just a willingness to try something new!
"Water First," an Award-winning Documentary Film
"Water First" recently premiered at the World Water Forum in Mexico City, and was awarded second prize in the first International Water & Film Festival. This short documentary was filmed in Malawi and South Africa, and illustrates how water is a crucial ingredient in addressing myriad issues including poverty, disease control, girls' education, gender equality, population control and the care of HIV/AIDS patients.

"Audobon" - Larry Hott
Lawrence R. Hott and Diane Garey have been producing documentary films since 1978. Their awards include an Emmy for Outstanding Historical Programming, two Academy Award nominations, a George Foster Peabody Award, the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award, the Erik Barnouw Award, five American Film Festival Blue Ribbons, fourteen CINE Golden Eagles, screenings at Telluride, and first-place awards from the San Francisco, Chicago, National Educational, and New England Film Festivals. Larry will show his latest documentary, "Audobon," and talk about the challenges of making such a documentary. More about the film can be viewed here:
"Who Killed the Electric Car?"
Please join us for a viewing and discussion of the 2006 documentary about the life and death of electric vehicles in California. Following the documentary, there will be a panel discussion featuring ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Professors Bob Turner and Rik Scarce, Chelsea Sexton, an electric car expert featured in the documentary, and Greg Hampson, Principal Engineer from Engineering Systems Analysis.
