U 0 ) ,p Cp U CxMinutes for CEPP meeting of 6 March 2008 In attendance: Deb Hall (Chair), Terry Diggory, Pat Oles, Kyle Nichols, Dan Nathan, Rik Scarce, Muriel Poston, Erica Bastress-Dukehart, Sadiatu Kamara. The meeting opened with a visit from Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) Susan Kress and Dean of Special Programs, Jeff Segrave advising CEPP of their recommendation to close the University Without Walls program. Discussion ensued about protocol for closure, faculty governance and the process of moving this recommendation to the faculty for a vote. Dean of Studies Michael Ennis-Mcmillan met with CEPP to discuss the need for an academic grievance policy. He provided the committee with recommendations as follows: Recommendations The Committee on Educational Policies and Planning should develop an academic grievance policy that protects students from prejudicial or capricious grading. The academic grievance policy should be included in the Faculty Handbook, and any subsequent changes to the policy should be approved following the procedures used for making changes to the Faculty Handbook. The Catalog, Student Academic Handbook, and other print and electronic publications should use the same academic grievance language appearing in the Faculty Handbook. The Catalog should include a section describing the functions of the Committee on Academic Freedom and Rights (CAFR). The DOS suggested that a clear policy regarding grade grievances would provide guidance and direction for faculty, administrators, and students. He also pointed out to the committee that Part Six of the Faculty Handbook, adopted in February 2008 prohibits retaliation against any person reporting or thought to have reported harassment or discrimination with examples of retaliation including unfair grading and biased evaluation of performance or assignments (Faculty Handbook, Part Six, Section VIII. B. Retaliatory Actions). Yet, the College has no procedure for resolving an academic grievance if there is evidence of unfair grading and biased evaluation of coursework. The DOS noted that CAS has seen the initial draft of his recommendations, but that he believes CEPP should develop a policy for the College. CAFR has drafted a memo in support of a policy. Students in SGA are also supportive of a policy. CEPP agreed to form a sub-committee to propose an academic grievance policy.
