The minutes for the September 13 meeting were approved. The meeting started with a reminder that we will meet with Chris Klyza from Middlebury next Tuesday. Beau gave a brief background of Chris including details of his fractional position (60/40 split) and that he was the first such line at Middlebury. Beau also mentioned that he sits on their equivalent of CAPT so he will have a broader institutional perspective. After a brief discussion CEPP members agreed to invite John Berman (chair of CAPT) to the meeting with Chris Klyza. CEPP then launched into a general discussion of interdisciplinary (ID) programs at ϳԹ. The issues that we discussed included: The difference between a program and a department The number of programs at ϳԹ (8 total, 7 of which are not associated with a department) The general differences in ID program structure: some ID programs only have core course at the 100 level while others (e.g. ES) have a core curriculum with program rubric courses at the 100 and 300 levels ID programs that have required more core courses (within the program rubric) seem to need more resources to deliver their curriculum In addition to teaching, it was also acknowledged that the role of advising and research in growing ID programs requires more faculty time and resources The discussion then moved to the current status of programs at ϳԹ. The points of discussion included: ϳԹ ID programs do not have equal status as departments Many of ϳԹs peer institutions have ID lines in different forms that are dedicated to ID programs Thus, we are behind these institutions in supporting ID programs and we need to act in order to keep pace with our peer institutions Some ID programs are growing rapidly in numbers of majors ES, for example, has revamped the vision to be more rich and robust and as result the vision outstrips reality A brief discussion ensued regarding the ID programs and CAPT: A current problem is that letters from ID programs are given little weight by CAPT The initial procedures for a full ID line would include a Program Personel Committee that would effectively act like a department for the tenure process At the CAPT open forum in Spring 2006, faculty were concerned that ID lines may require a shift in resource allocation Another concern voiced at the CAPT open forum was that such a shift in resource allocation might mean that some small departments would have a difficult time competing against larger programs for resources In light of the previous discussions, the meeting was closed by encouraging CEPP to think about the difficult issues regarding ID lines. It was discussed that fractional lines seem more problematic than full ID lines. One of the larger issues includes the impression that ID programs were established with the belief that they would not require additional resources. One CEPP member pointed out that situations change especially when programs are attracting high numbers of students. Another issue relates to the impact on junior faculty and their role in ID programs. ,R W hn=h>?h>?h@3h6hv^h]h@ed !+, - - [\ & Fgd>?gd>? & Fgd>?Y & Fgd>?gd>? & Fgd>? 1h/ =!"#$%@@@ NormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH DA@D Default Paragraph FontRiR Table Normal4 l4a (k(No List z z !+,--[\ Y 888888888888888888888888888888888888888 8@0( B S ?6;BIW_oxmr 0 8 Q\1@s>,Au_q M~eoBG"h^`OJQJo(hHh^`OJQJ^Jo(hHohpp^p`OJQJo(hHh@ @ ^@ `OJQJo(hHh^`OJQJ^Jo(hHoh^`OJQJo(hHh^`OJQJo(hHh^`OJQJ^Jo(hHohPP^P`OJQJo(hHh^`OJQJo(hHh^`OJQJ^Jo(hHohpp^p`OJQJo(hHh@ @ ^@ `OJQJo(hHh^`OJQJ^Jo(hHoh^`OJQJo(hHh^`OJQJo(hHh^`OJQJ^Jo(hHohPP^P`OJQJo(hHh^`OJQJo(hHh^`OJQJ^Jo(hHohpp^p`OJQJo(hHh@ @ ^@ `OJQJo(hHh^`OJQJ^Jo(hHoh^`OJQJo(hHh^`OJQJo(hHh^`OJQJ^Jo(hHohPP^P`OJQJo(hHh ^ `OJQJo(hHh^`OJQJ^Jo(hHoh^`OJQJo(hHh| | ^| `OJQJo(hHhLL^L`OJQJ^Jo(hHoh^`OJQJo(hHh^`OJQJo(hHh^`OJQJ^Jo(hHoh^`OJQJo(hHq M,A~eoQ\1@ @pδ5lm ` @UnknownGTimes New Roman5Symbol3 Arial?
